Hackintosh thoughts, part 2
#1
Here is my laundry list of parts for this build. I know I could spend less but I am not looking to downgrade my speed and need some horsepower for my main workstation.

Motherboard
- Gigabyte LGA1366 SATA3 ATI CrossFireX ATX Motherboard GA-X58A-UD3R

CPU
- Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz
I looked at the extreme edition CPU ($1k for the chip alone ::o) but I would get better performance with a SSD and over-clocking the CPU.

CPU Cooler
- Zalman CNPS9900LED Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler
Every time I overclock, I get the best cooler I can find and this sucker is HUGE!

Video Card
- EVGA GeForce GTX460 1 GB Superclocked GDDR5 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card

Case
- Antec Three Hundred Gaming Case
I have some quiet fans in my storage area that fit this case that will now get some use. I built a PC for my wife with this case and I found it very roomy, well constructed and more importantly, quiet.

Optical Drives (2)
- Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive IHAS424-98

Power Supply
- Corsair Professional Series Gold High Performance 750-Watt Power Supply CMPSU-750AX

Boot HD
- Samsung 256 GB Solid State Drive MZ-5PS256
Fast drive with lots of positive reviews.

RAM
- Crucial CT2KIT25664BA1339 4GB 2GBx2 240-pin PC3-10600 DIMM DDR3 Memory
Will be adding 16 GB later on (2 of this set: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333)

Extra storage
I will be using 3 x 2TB WD Black drives from my MacPro on this rig.

Total out of pocket will be $1780, or a net cost of $1695 after $95 back in rebates.

Am I missing anything? I am busy for the next week and will not have any time to put this together, which gives me a few days to think about this project. If this works out, I will sell my MP (quad 2.66, 16GB RAM, no scratches/dings, original box) on CL/Ebay (I am guessing I can get at least $1500 (probably more) so the new computer will not cost all that much to build, that considered).

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for the prior advice and encouragement everyone!

Sounds like a lot of money for a non-Mac, Mac.

I thought before people were tossing around $1000?

I think you need to use RAM in 3's for that motherboard.

:agree:

In fact, I have no idea what the OP is talking about. He needs to post this thread to some forum where the average person reading the post understands what he's talking about.

Someone who says they're going to drop a couple grand on a Hackintosh is not the the typical reader of this forum.

Your system look groovy to me -- I'd be happy to give it space on my desk. Nothing I'd change.

So nobody buys Mac Pros any more? Compare it to the 5 year old Buy.com $900 Mac Pro. It is double (or more) the CPU performance, 4 times the GPU, twice as much RAM (faster RAM too), 8 times the disk performance, dual eSATA, USB 3 ($80 add on for a Mac Pro) and SATA 6.0 GB/s.

I was anticipating a philosophical discussion...

Sounds like a nice system but I would double-check the parts against a known good list. http://www.tonymacx86.com/wiki/index.php...y:Hardware And that mobo does have triple channel memory. However, you could buy 3 sets of the (4x2) RAM and be done with it. Smile

Sounds like a beast of a system.

Looks sweet. Have no idea whether it's good hardware for a hackintosh, but that's what boards are for.

I like the SSD design.

the OWC SSD options look slightly faster than the Samsung you posted, for about the same price:
