Can an iPad be used without a computer?
#1
An elderly aunt, a technophobe, wants to start using email and the Internet. Can she get an iPad and use it without having to learn how to use a regular computer?

I have heard (will try to substantiate with link) that first time setup needs a Mac or PC so Apple Stores can do this in-store for you if you ask...perfect for people like your aunt, new users with no existing contacts, media, etc.

Then the only "worry" would be, that she would not have a backup. Apple will start her up. Then an occasional hook up to your computer to backup.

Yes, if you can get someone to activate the iPad for you. You also need a computer to restore the iPad or to update the OS. If she wants to backup any purchased music, video, etc, she also needs a computer for syncing.

I plan to do this for my brother who doesn't want a computer but does want email & the net. It should work fine until an OS update comes along -- that can only be DL'd while connected to a computer. Perhaps a trip to a Genius @ Apple Store will take care of that??? but day-to-day checking of email and surfing and buying apps can all be done w/out a computer. [My husband has an iPad 1 which he rarely syncs to his computer.]

I have found that the major problem with the elderly trying to use a GUI is hand-eye coordination and timing. They often botch pointing, tapping, dragging etc. Forget about all the fancy moves you can do with your fingers.

With the 3G model they don't have to get home Internet. I think it is an ideal solution for older ludites.

Been thinking about one for my Dad. He loves playing with my iPhone and I loves having all his "CD"s in his pocket!
