paraphrasing.
But, I have shared views that she has, as well. Many people close to those bombs lived a long life. Yes, there were deaths as well. Interesting to A. Read her opinions, but B. that mainstream media actually printed it.

"Now everybody's making such a fuss about the reactors in Fukushima. But it's nothing like that [Atomic bomb]," she added.

It is a very VERY serious situation at Fukushima... but given the actual radiation in the area, and the probability of future releases (granted, that could get radically worse from here, but it's far from a forgone conclusion at this point), maybe she's more right than wrong.
Notice how even given the alarming spikes, they do keep going back DOWN.
If that continues, then this could be a lot more manageable (long term) than the "Meltdown Mavens" on the news would have you believe.

This thing isn't over yet. How the heck can she take a position that it's not serious, or that it won't be?

The family is limiting its electricity use as much as possible, responding to official calls to conserve power, shivering at night under extra sweaters in Tokyo's unseasonable cold.
Bless their hearts. Imagine 21st-century Americans responding to "official calls" with this sort of community-mindedness. Can't see it.

Get your grandma on here and let's hear what she thinks about rising gas prices or the situation in Libya.

You think she's just trying to remind the world of the Atomic Bombs we dropped on them?

Yeah, wth, why does she keep bringing that up?
So she remembers what it was like to be 2 1/2 miles from an atomic bomb blast-- big deal. What a bore.

Same way the ignorant news-weasels can talk about what a horrible catastrophe it is, and how big an area will be uninhabitable for a bazillion years...
Things can be exaggerated in BOTH directions. Difference is, she's right AT THIS MOMENT, that outside a relatively small area, it HASN'T been a horrid catastrophe. Potential is still there... but I'll say it again; don't borrow trouble - there's tens of thousands of people that need help, and a lot of clean up to do that has NOTHING to do with Fukushima Daiichi.

I don't disagree with you. I just thought she was reaching an "event conclusion," which is of course preposterous.

Yep, the last time that happened our nation voted him out of office partly for giving news no one wanted to hear--- conserve. The not-so-subtle images of wearing the cardigan sweater and fireplace in the background as "alternative heating sources" were anathema.
