I Roughed Up A Deer Last Night
#1
Had to travel to the next county north of me around dusk last night. The dear deers were romping all over the place. After a few sightings, (very common around here) I made a mental note to be on guard.

Wouldn't you know, a few seconds later a small herd of about 8 of them scrambled out of the woods, and started across the road from my right. I jammed on the brakes, steered into the oncoming lane, (rural area, no traffic in sight) and just as I got to them, they all retreated from where they came from... except one. He or she tried to cross in front of me but ran out of room. By this time I had slowed from 55 down to about 30. I heard a slight thud, and looked in my rear view mirror to see the critter stumble a bit, (more confused than hurt, he/she didn't even drop to the ground) then it tore off running into the woods.

My truck didn't have any damage whatsoever, and I'm guessing the fool deer glanced off the passenger side of the truck box after running into me.

It was a weird encounter, but I think we both lucked out in the end. It was a nervous ride until I got to my destination though. :eye:

Been there, done that. Got the dents. My most epic was the deer hoofprint on the roof of my car... the damn thing ran down off a hill, jumped halfway across the road, and pushed off the roof of my car.

I showed it to my then 3 year old daughter, and she exclaimed "Santa Claus !"

matt, northern (lower peninsula) MI. I'm sure you have had some run ins yourself, from your days in, what, WI?

cbelt, cute story. I love it when all parties come away (nearly) unscathed.

Am I understanding this correctly? After noticing instances of deer near the road you were still driving at 55? It took eight of them actually crossing the road near you to slow to 30?

If that was the case, you drive much differently than I do.

I've seen one bound out of the woods, slam into the side a car that just passed me , run off into the median about 300 feet and drop dead.
Girl in the car was cursing like a drunk angry sailor. Car was full of airbag dust.

I've slammed on the brakes to try to not hit a moose. At the last moment (as it was staring into my headlights) it took what seemed like just two ambling steps and was gone.
I didn't take that road home again for months.
