Let's Try this Again, Video TS to M4V

Never got any real answers, so I'm trying again . . .

Is this even what I want to do?

Sorry to be so thick, but I am really confused. We just got a BD/DVD player that has wireless and a usb slot. I have a bunch of movies I've backed up as video TS folders, and a couple that are m4v.

I have Toast, and I see where I can convert to MP4, is that the same as m4v?

I did put one of the m4v's on a usb stick and it played on the machine.

So what software exactly do I use to convert the TS folders, Toast? Something else? And what exactly do I want to convert them to? And what kind of settings? There are about a million online sites, but now I'm just more confused than ever.

And can I eventually just convert them all to something, then put the hard drive with all the (whatever) files on it and watch them from there, or do I need a conversion box.

My apologies, but my head is swimming, and I'm more confused than ever.

I do it all the time.

Just use the default setting. Under Regular. Either Normal or High Profile.

Well, you now have two threads that have overwhelmingly recommended you use Handbrake. Short of someone coming to your house and doing it for you, it sounds like you may just have to download the software, read the documentation, and jump in. After that, if there's something specific in Handbrake that you don't understand, I'm sure a more specific question could be asked, and it would probably elicit an equally specific answer.

I have downloaded handbrake and used it, but so far, I'm unhappy with the results. They're rather pixelly, so I was wondering about the differences in formats and aps.

I will be ripping everything for the motorhome and leaving the physical media in a storage shed so I was hoping for the best results.

I've read up on all this but am still very confused. Sorry to keep asking questions that seem so obvious to everyone else.

Hi, Kate.

I find the Apple Universal setting to be fine in terms of quality and flexibility to use on any Apple product.

What I've done is make a set of m4v conversions using handbrake onto a hard drive.

The next step has lots of options. You could buy a WD media reader, or a Roku box, or use a mac using Front Row and play via direct connect or via streaming to an Apple TV.

Handbrake.

There is a quality setting/slider.

Plan on ripping a short segment a few times with different options (deinterlace, quality setting, etc) to get it how you like it. Then write down those settings and make a preset. Do write it down because the preset setting is confusing.

Ripping stuff for the kids PSP took about 5 tries to get it working well, but now I have the formula to do it repeatedly.
