Running around with my Kill-a-watt testing things for the past week or so, and just curious how I stack up against you other MRF'ers.

assuming electric rates vary across the country, a better question would have been "how much electricity do you use each month?"

true, but the cat's out of the bag now...
Here's a current table of average rates across the US: http://www.eia.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm...5_6_b.html

It ranges from 60 to 130 depending on the weather. Last month was $73 which was a pleasant surprise; I suspect the new solar powered attic fan is really helping!

We have epically expensive power up here. I'm wishing I could put up my own darn wind generator (we're in a high wind density area).

Our bill for this month is $350. It's by far the most since we've lived in this house, which is fairly energy efficient. Most of June was > 90 degree temps, though.

$0. We're on the level-pay plan and Southern California Edison can never figure it out right. Every year, at the end of the cycle, we either owe $$$ or they owe us $$$ (and it's never close). This year they owed us -- two bills in a row at $0. And it's going to be $0 next month as well...
Hey, wait a second! They're getting free use of our money!! Never thought about that before -- but it does feel good not paying...

How do those who have very low electric bills achieve that? No AC? gas hot water heater?

I'm on Good Cents Budgeting where all of the bills are averaged & I pay about the same each month. This past Feb. with the heat pump running 24/7 the charged amount was over $200 but I paid $135.
I've always been a big fan of electricity & probably use more than the average single household.

Mine is a smaller townhouse, both sides are well insulated thanks to my neighbors, I have also done a lot in the attic to help insulate in the winter and get rid of extra heat in the summer. No gas appliances at all- electric hot water, oven, dryer, heat pump. |
