Win7 Can't Play .MOV Files from iPhone—Why?
#1
My daughter writes:

We have Windows 7 machines and are having trouble reading .mov files taken on an iphone. We use VLC or Quicktime player to read .mov files taken with our Canon camera and have no trouble with that. However, if we try to open the iPhone .mov files with Quicktime, we get this error: "Error -2048: Couldn't open the file ____ because it is not a file that QuickTime understands." If we try to open the file in VLC, the program crashes immediately.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

No point in telling her to get a Mac, as she just upgraded from her aging G4 iBook to a Dell 16" laptop, because a comparable MBP was twice the money.

sounds like the file wasn't completely downloaded

These iPhone videos are email attachments, which she's downloading from her email account on Gmail. Any reason why the downloads would be truncated?

Not quite as "comparable" as thought, eh?

And if you do an "apples" to "Apple" comparison, you can probably spot the difference readily . . .

Nothing specifically wrong with a Dell, when it's all you need, but sometimes, it ain't. (sic)

An iPhone video not working with QuickTime is a Windows problem? Apple makes both the iPhone and QuickTime. Care to reassess?

mrlynn,
Not that it should make a difference, but any reason not to try playing the file in iTunes? What browser did she use to download the file? Is the file size of the downloaded video the same as what is listed on the iPhone? Same size in gmail?

Sigh…Not everyone is an Apple stockholder or a raging brand loyalist. Is this MacResource thread dealing with two different users not being able to transfer photos from their iPhones to their Macs also Dell's/Microsoft's fault?

Two users . . . TWO users . . . wow, TWO different users. My gawd, the world is coming to an end.

Beleaguered.

Read my post. I wasn't pontificating about how Great Apple is and how dull Dell is. There is a market for Dell. But I haven't seen any Dell's recently that are Comparable to a Mac when the Dell is half the price.

So, show me. I know you will. Just make it COMPARABLE.

Three out of seven people? Plus a fourth person posting a link to a google search result displaying many discussions of the same or similar problems?
