Not much out of him for many many days. Will he get out of the race?
Is Newt toast?

Only if he wants to promote his party's nominee. And he doesn't have much of a record for doing right by his own. Party and wives.

He's off regrouping the wagons on the left coast.

No, he will not get out of the race. He's a demagogue and an egomaniac. He'll spend every last cent of his contributors' money.

I don't see Sanitorium going very far, so it'll be Newt's second chance (once again) when something derails on the values-bandwagon.

Waiting for a VP candidate slot ?
Successful Presidents seem to select VP's that are at the opposite spectrum in terms of age and where they fit into their party. It's how you capture that large wing. Failed candidates don't do a good job at that.

The only reason you haven't heard anything from Newt is that he hasn't said anything absurdly stupid lately - which is typically how he gets his publicity.
Either that or Santorum and Romney are simply overshadowing him with their own respective absurd stupidities.

As I have said before, Newt will stay in the race as long as he is seeing a positive cash flow from his books, speaking fees, and paying himself as an campaign consultant.

He may not even need positive cash flow. His campaign has significant debt, very little cash, and his super PAC sugar daddy has cut him off and according to some reports gone over to Romney.
Whatever cash he can put together in California this week is probably enough to help him campaign in some southern states, maybe eek out another win like Oklahoma. This is the guy who doesn't make courtesy concession calls, so he'll probably never officially drop out, just fade away.
