So what's the best route to get to Lion?
#1
I am running 10.5.8 right now and am considering grabbing Snow Leopard for certain and possibly Lion. Where should I be looking to get a hold of these? Do I need to go to eBay for these? On Apple's site it looks like it would be $29 to get SL and then another $29 for Lion. Is that right? Is the Apple route actually the best one?

Check this thread and the threads that it links to for info on getting Apple to ship you Snowleopard for free. (assuming it's still valid)

Thanks for the link! Do I have to be a current mobileme account holder to use this because I am not?

I don't really remember, and I have a MobileMe account, so it might have been a requirement.

You might also want to wait about a week to see if there are any announcements about Mountain Lion at WWDC next week, and maybe skip Lion.

I would get an upgraded computer next week after Apple launches them. Sell the one you have. Lion will come with it and you won't have to buy SL in order to run Lion. See the savings all around . . .

There have been so many threads about Lion that aren't glowing. I am going to wait for 10.8 as it will be out shortly and even then I'll wait for .3 or .4 before I go to 10.8. If you can get a free SL disk go that route for now.

i've seen used Snow Leopard discs as low as $17, try LEM swap.

from there, Lion is $29 at the App Store.

The best route to Lion isn't necessarily about how to get the OS ... an older Mac running Leopard might not run Lion as well. I like Lion and run it on a 1.83 mini and it can be fine or it can slow as a dog. My wife runs it on her 2.4 MBP with no complaints. So maybe he later-er C2D Macs are the tipping point but if you've got an earlier-er model I'd be looking to hold off until later this summer for a new Mac that comes with ML.
