Can a kindle auto update as a display?

I am interested in finding a low cost solution to a problem. I want to have a display that will be able to automatically update itself by reading a text file. The text file could reside on a FTP server. The trouble is that I need different devices to display different things. Could a kindle do this?

Could you make the file a html file with it set to auto refresh? If so, any device that can display a webpage would work.
