well, that pretty much sums it up for me. If Sarah Palin was a better candidate than Romney to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency, then Romney is indeed not qualified for prime time.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) defended Mitt Romney from Democratic speculation that he passed on him as a 2008 running mate after reviewing his tax returns, saying Sarah Palin was simply the better choice at the time.

McCain called the tax claims “outrageous” and “disgraceful” in an interview with Politico Tuesday. He said he chose Palin “because we thought that Sarah Palin was the better candidate.”

Republicans sure have a lot of 'splaining to do and they are not doing it very well.

Asked why he chose not to go with Romney, McCain said:

Now, we don't need to get silly about this.

In fact, I AGREE with McCain.

Remember... McCain was dead in the water. If he had added Romney to the ticket, it would just be adding an anchor - they would have sunk faster.

Forget your awesome hindsight and think back to the week she was nominated. She became an instant rockstar and gave a heroin laced shot of adrenalin to the campaign. They SURGED in the polls...

then Palin started talking... and talking...

BUT, I'd wager that McCain/Palin did better than McCain/Romny could have done.

Therefore Palin was the better candidate - EVEN if she is an absolute moron.

Standing alone, Romney is way, way better than Palin as a candidate, but to get an already dead campaign rolling again, Palin did way more than Romney ever could have...

Also, there was supposedly a huge contingent of disaffected Clinton supporters who the GOP thought would vote for a ticket with a woman, any woman, on it.

It's weird how we're forgetting (well, everyone, not just us) that Mitt was considered a non-starter after that footage of him blowing up at the folks trying to tidy him up for the cameras came out.
Oddly I can't find a damn reference to it on Youtube or the 'net.
