"Why Romney's bogus Jeep claims matter"
#1
Mitt Romney campaigned in Defiance, Ohio, last night, and rolled out a new argument. "I saw a story today that one of the great manufacturers in this state, Jeep, now owned by the Italians, is thinking of moving all production to China," he said. "I will fight for every good job in America, I'm going to fight to make sure trade is fair, and if it's fair, America will win."

There are a few problems with this line of attack, starting with the simple fact that Romney wasn't telling the truth.

If Romney had had his way with our auto industry ALL of our manufacturers would be owned by the Italians, or at least somebody outside the US.

Love this part:

"For additional context, it's worth noting that the Detroit News reports today that Chrysler is adding an additional 1,100 new jobs. Why? To build more Jeeps right here in the United States."

FWIW, Chrysler is not 'owned by the Italians'. Fiat (a private Italian company) is majority owner. The other major owner is the UAW Pension plan.

Fiat did get a LOT of its share in Chrysler for FREE during Bankruptcy... a sweetheart deal.. maybe. They also paid back bailout loans, took on debt, etc...

Romney ? Yeah.. his speech writer told him a whopper. Idiots.

Majority owner = owned by

I think Romney gets a pass on that one. The day to day management of Chrysler/Fiat is done by Fiat people.

Also FWIW...

Romney said "I saw a story". He did not say "Fiat IS". The 'facts' of the story were not checked. Gov. Romney neglected to recognize what most of us already know... just because it appears in print or on the interwebs, doesn't make it true.

HERE is the story he saw.

Which was a bunch of wild speculation based on completely misunderstanding an interview with a Chrysler executive, who was discussing making Jeeps in China FOR THE CHINESE MARKET. Here is that interview:

Being misled by a media source is NOT the same as "Lying". OK ?

A man dies, goes to heaven, stands before St. Peter, and see a huge wall of clocks. The man asks what all the clocks are for and St. Peter explains, "These are lie clocks. Everyone on earth has a lie clock. Every time a person lies, the clock hands move."

Pointing to one, the man says, "Whose clock is that?"

"That's Mother Teresa's," St. Peter answers. "The hands have never moved, indicating she never told a lie."

"Incredible," the man responds. "And whose clock is that?"

St. Peter responds, "That's Abraham Lincoln's. The hands moved twice telling us he told two lies in his entire life."

"Where is Mitt Romney's clock?" the man asks.

"Romney's clock is in Jesus' office," St. Peter says. "He's using it as a ceiling fan."
