All hail mediocrity

http://eagnews.org/all-hail-mediocrity-p...-assembly/

This happened to my son back in 1986. The principal held a school wide assembly to present awards to honor students. The result was an assembly hall filled with losers heckling the smart kids as they received their academic awards. My son won five or six awards and he told me he was embarrassed to walk up on stage after the first one. The parents were successful in getting the awards presented at an evening function the following year attended only by teachers, parents and honorees.

Stuff like this really pisses me off.

Have you exposed your son to your MRF posts, or would that be an event limited to selected attendees in an effort to avoid embarrassment?

What's funny about demeaning smart kids?

The real question is: what kind of middle school hands out awards for 'academic excellence'?
Sixth, seventh and eighth graders don't achieve 'academic excellence'. They go to school to learn the rinky-dink elementary stuff in those grades. How can you 'excel' in seventh grade math or this one...
Hoot
By Hiaasen, Carl

An ecological mystery, made up of endangered miniature owls, the Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House scheduled to be built over their burrows, and the owls' unlikely allies--three middle school kids determined to beat the system.?

This whole thing is as absurd and muddle-headed as Kindergarten Graduation Ceremonies.

Steve, why are you so hateful? Do you beat your dog to train it or offer rewards instead? I know middle school kids that would run circles around you in math and geography.

Ah, the memories. I remember fondly back in 1968 at the football banquet when I won the Award for "Most Improved" for the 3rd year in a row.
