this is from December 2012, they also sent unapproved applications from at least 7 other conservative groups.
"Political insiders and campaign-finance watchdogs have long questioned how Crossroads, the brainchild of GOP strategist Karl Rove, had characterized its intentions to the IRS.
Now, for the first time, ProPublica has obtained the group's application for recognition of tax-exempt status, filed in September 2010. The IRS has not yet recognized Crossroads GPS as exempt, causing some tax experts to speculate that the agency is giving the application extra scrutiny. If Crossroads GPS is ultimately not recognized, it could be forced to reveal the identities of its donors."
It's illegal for the IRS to release applications of groups whose tax exempt status is not approved yet.
Crossroads spent $70 million during 2012.

"The most senior Democrat on the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday said laws were “probably broken” in an incident concerning reports that the IRS targeted conservative groups for additional monitoring, calling the issue “one of the most alarming things” he’s ever seen."

If Obama directed the IRS to harass these groups, as Nixon did in the 1970s, then he should be impeached. At the moment I don't think Obama even knew about it.

I hope not.
But the chilling effect would be to harass these groups and delay approval of their applications, and a rejected app means they have to reveal their donor lists, which would put a damper on their fundraising efforts because donors don't want that scrutiny.
I want this to be something different than what it sounds like now, because it sounds very bad.
Lousy all around.

I dont expect he knew, not having him insulated from that kind of information would be truly idiotic. Finding somebody other in the White who did is another story....

Imagine this becoming a new standard of political behavior, then going step further, then another, and another....
Obama is facing another test of his Presidency in how will he deal with responsible ideaologues. Will we see public beheadins or perfume scented letters of reprimand and retrements on overgenerous public dole.....

I will note that 'lists of donors' are something the IRS can theoretically develop after they receive those selfsame donor's returns and connect the dots. I get the feeling that this sort of scrutiny is the kind that is given to suspected fraudulent tax shelter operations.
As noted in other threads, the Citizen's opinion from the SCOTUS gave politicians an unending source of secure and tax deductible funding, which is probably why the IRS got so agressive.
The fact that the IRS appears to have been MORE agressive towards Republican focused operations is the real problem. But their agressive actions towards all of these operations that are buying and selling politicians are VERY laudable.

just a note - (we're all gonna be CPA's by the time this is done)
donations to 501c4's are not tax deductible, so the IRS would not be able to use donor's returns to determine where that money came from (not that they should be doing that anyway.)
