Example, this Young the Giant CD:
http://www.amazon.com/Young-Giant/dp/B00..._1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1371581141&sr=1-1&keywords=young+the+giant
By the physical CD for $3.99 (and it's even Prime eligible) and get the "AutoRip" MP3s for free.
However, if you just want the MP3s, then you have to pay $9.49:
http://www.amazon.com/Young-The-Giant/dp..._0?ie=UTF8&qid=1371581141&sr=1-1
Is this some kind of licensing issue or something like that?

I never buy mp3's anymore unless it's from an album that only has one good song on it.

Autorips reside on Amazon cloud. You have to agree to their terms and bit rate.
Just buy the cd and rip your own.

I agree- I think the idea is to unload the physical item taking up space.

Having the CD isn't a problem, it's a windfall.
But hey -- everyone just continue to pay for lossy MP3s until all the lossless music is gone from the market if you want a "problem."

Half of these responses don't seem to be allowing for the fact that the CD is less than half the price of the mp3, which was the point of the OP. Canned mp3 responses which don't address the pricing paradox are sort of misplaced.

How could it ever be gone if it's lossless?
