plex media sever questions
#1
I have many clips from Jool show in UK that run thru the PMS database and come up wrong.
Is there a way fro me to name them and have that name stick thru scans?
Is there a way that I might load my own "cover" for an item that would stick thru scans?

If you use the Myplex portion on the website to manage your server, its very easy to do all of this. You can change titles, categories, covers etc. I dont have a step by step unfortunately, but here is the website: https://my.plexapp.com/

thanks Stavs. I'll look deeper into it. I've signed in but never investigated or knew what the ..... it was for.

If I read correctly, you are trying to write metadata?

If the Myplex proves bothersome, you can also use MetaZ for editing that data.

I haven't used plex in a couple of years (since buying my ATV which works much better) in part because of these type of issues. So I am not an expert and am doing this from memory. But my memory of the FAQ instructions was the the PMS had a preferred naming format, and so if I named my files using that structure it generally sorted them correctly. so it was something like:

Sopranos/season 2/e1

If I didn't separate out the season by a subdir, it would usually choke. I am sure there is a way to name without using a subdir for the season, but it was easier just to sort by season. Sopranos/s2 e1 didn't seem to work.

ATV is infinitely better the more I Roku/Plex. It just works.
The Roku/Plex is left over from our analog set that we recently replaced.
I must sell my APTV2 and get 2 new APTV 3s.

Editing metadata within PMS/Library is inconsistent.
Using first frame of video doesn't seem to be possible, only 1st frame, which doesn't always have picture in it.

Hmm...everyone has all these issues with Plex. I just follow standard naming conventions and have no issues. The only issues I ever really had were with Looney Tunes cartoons...some simple googling enabled me to get it set up right. I have an ATV3, and it is nowhere near as good as Plex (when set up properly). Sure theres a learning curve, but once you get over that its smooth sailing.

I'd love to love Plex, but I just can't. The playback engine is wonderful, but everything else (as the pirate with the steering wheel in his pants says) drives me nuts. I have nearly 9TB of movies, TV shows, concerts, etc. on our server, and I'm not about to rename and/or resort all of them just to comply with the Plex devs ideas of how MY media ought to be named and sorted. The way Plex displays and re-organizes media is terrible, and pays no attention to the user's intentions.

I finally gave up and bought a used MacBook on eBay to serve as the front end on our main TV (the old TV got the old Mac Mini). Front Row and Perian work much better than Plex for me.
