Some people are infrequent flyers, like my son just starting out. How nice it would be if these miles didn't expire. It would create a lot of goodwill, instead of disgust.

Yep. But they Do Not Care. Hence the fees on top of fees on top of fees.

I had something like 18000 miles that were taken away from me. What's the point of remaining loyal to an airline in order to run up frequent flyer miles if those miles don't mean anything? It actually creates resentment towards the company.

The fees on top of the fees etc -- selling food and drink, charging for baggage -- have been the difference between profit and loss. This is consistent with the tight margin that fuel costs are imposing on airlines.

Or they could charge the proper amount for the ticket in the first place.

This is the 4th time I've said this in the last 10 days, but I am SO happy I don't have to fly for work any more. Instead of 1 or 2x/month, I only fly 3 or 4 times per year and that is more than enough.
I do miss the frequent flyer "perks", but not enough to want to travel enough to earn them.

Frankly, I find this complaint a bit over the top. These are marketing programs designed to reward FREQUENT fliers and build loyalty. They are not aimed at people who don't fly often. That said, and as noted in the OP, there are easy and cheap ways to keep your miles from expiring. There are a ton of websites out there dedicated to informing you of how to do this. It's as easy as buying a single iTunes song through the airlines shopping site every 18 months. If you can't be bothered to do something simple like this once every year or so, then I don't see how you can complain that an airline that you are not using lets your miles expire.
Oh, one more thing...if it hasn't been too long you can sometimes call up the airline and ask them to reinstate your miles for either a small fee or some other token effort on your part.

If your miles expire, you are not a frequent flyer in the airlines mind. Thus they don't really care about you.

Delta.
Alaska Airlines miles don't expire as long as you get on one of their planes or a codeshare every two years, iirc.
