My phone took a bath...
#1
My iPhone4 took a dip in the Kasilof River last Friday when the waterproof bag that I thought I'd grabbed turned out to be a non-waterproof bag that did as well as my description suggests while we were dipnetting over the weekend (got 37 salmon! Freezer is stocked for the winter)

Anyway, it was time for an upgrade - the phone had been previously submerged and resurrected last Nov in Hawaii, though the bottom edge of the screen was a bit wonky and I had to turn on accessability and 3-finger zooming to hit some buttons along the bottom edge. Beyond that, it had a cracked screen after dropping out of a shirt pocket while loading lumber at Lowe's last October.

So the options are -
1. get new phone through ATT - we're upgrade eligible based though locked in for another two years
2. get new unlocked phone
3. get used unlocked phone
4. get used locked phone
5. get a dumbphone from work
5. go phoneless This option was rejected by my wife Wink

Option 1 has the highest long-term cost with somewhat reduced upfront cost.

Option 2 has the highest upfront cost, though potentially lower future cost if we change providers. Sticking with the same provider, net operational cost is the same.

Option 3 a blend of 1 and 2 - higher upfront cost but less than new. Operating cost same or less depending on carrier. Potential issues with used / stolen goods.

Option 4 cheapest upfront and same or less operating cost. Potential issues with used / stolen goods.

Option 5 is available. Flip phones of yore since my position wasn't deemed to 'need' a smartphone.

Option 6, while it's been somewhat peaceful, wont' fly.

To simplify further,

NEW
USED
WORKPHONE

How big a risk do I have with a used phone that passes physical inspection? Any reasonable way to check if it's been stolen (which, if the box and other paperwork are there, I assume is somewhat less likely)?

a better question is can you save some money by using a virtual operator such as virgin or straighttalk or a few others?

Another option you didn't consider is that you could pay Apple $149 to replace it out of warranty.

http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=servicefaq&geo=United_States&product=iphone

Out-of-Warranty Service

If you own an iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will service your iPhone for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.
iPhone model Out-of-Warranty Service
iPhone 5 $229
iPhone 4S $199
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS,
iPhone 3G, Original iPhone $149

A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in U.S. dollars and are subject to local tax.

When setting up out-of-warranty service, Apple will request credit card pre-authorization for the maximum service fee listed above. This amount will be deducted from your credit limit. The final service fee we charge will be determined during testing and may be less than the service fee listed above.

Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPhone that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.

I've bought three used iphones on fleabay with good results. You can check the ESN/IMEI # (Settings/General/About) on any of several web sites to see if it's clean. Steer clear if the seller doesn't provide the number.

Do you know anyone that wants to upgrade? You can offer to buy their iP4 from them.

my son's very damaged IP4 was replaced OOW just a few weeks ago. they took one look at the cracked/crushed front and back and swapped it right out.

I don't have first hand experience, but I would expect that's the primary first choice. Who knows, if they're out of iPhone 4's the might insist that you take a 4S instead at the same price.

It'd be awful if they were out. I suppose that's my one hesitant thought on the OOW exchange - a 4s or 5 would be nice for the iOS6 features.
