about cars on CL, listed by "owner"
#1
http://cnj.craigslist.org/cto/4060453479.html

look at picture 5! compare pics #2 and #5, it is a different car.

What do you think, is this listed by owner? There seem to be a lot of cars for sale on that lot. to me this looks like a dealer.

Also in many other listings I see cars without license plate. not blurred or blacke dout, just no license plate at all. To me those also look like dealers, I doubt a real owner would go to the trouble to remove the plate, take pictures and put the plates back. They would just blur it in the photo. or some of them just post the pic with license plate. why do people blur it out anyway?

BTW, I am looking to sell so I am just browsing to get an idea if I should sell on CL or try word of mouth at work, neighbors, etc.

Probably varies by region, but in my experience I'd say at least half of the "by owner" ads are dealers. I always flag but craigslist just doesn't care enough to have a working system.

just curious, if you don't own cars, why do you even spend time on the car section of CL?

Selling cars for others, helping others find cars. I actually know quite a bit about them and am pretty good at assessing their condition.

if you google the phone number it appears to be an "insurance broker" working out of a apartment.

The tail lamp assembly is definitely different from picture #2 to picture #5. If the title is in his name, he can sell his own property. If the name on the title is NOT his, then he's acting as a dealer and, must be properly licenced. He should be registered as a dealer of used vehicles (and possibly as a Motor Vehicle Rair Shop). If he isn't, he should be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The'y know how to go after him. The listed phone number (917-557-6991) , Googles to a "Rapid Insurance Agency in NY. There's also a reference to Edison, NJ. I smell a scammer.

ok, how about the second part of the question: why do people blur out the license plates when posting on CL? what bad could happen if one were to post the picture with license plate?

I own the previous model year of that same car (right down to exterior color and trim level). Photo #5 is the one that doesn't belong- the other four photos are the actual vehicle.
