If the guy shot in the driveway died then the gun did not save his life, it terminated it rather ruinously.

Exactly, which is why either "side" of the gun debate putting up instances of "guns good" or "guns bad" aren't meaningful for considerations of whether loose gun laws are better than strict gun laws at providing enough positive value for society. IOW, anecdotes are not very helpful in trying to weigh the pros and cons of gun regulation on society as a whole.

What is needed is many peer reviewed scientific studies. Unfortunately, the NRA has created conditions that has discouraged such studies so it will take longer than it should to get a sufficient compilation to make any firm conclusions.

That said, it may very well be worth discussing any one incident on its own merits - but generalizing away from that one incident very much is going to be problematic in terms of "anecdotes aren't data".

But $tevie and Ted, the linked site has data: they have found a total of 1075 incidences of guns saving potential crime victims. That surely justifies the 25k gun deaths every year.

Gee, you'd think if the NRA was as interested in making points like Charlie M is trying to, they would encourage those studies instead of trying to shut them down.

"Not willing to google it up yourself is the ultimate intellectual laziness.
I is it also a minimum intelligence test. if you are unable to do web search you should not be trying to discuss grown up subjects in the first place.

This way I hope to get a more informed discussion partner instead of propaganda fed parrot...."
