garage storage thoughts?
#1
Right now I have numerous storage cabinets in my garage but the house I am moving to has none at all. It also does not have a workbench. I'll be researching my lowe's and costco options but would appreciate any thoughts.

Now you know, you put a bunch of shelves in a garage and introduce as few as two storage boxes they immediately begin multiplying right ?

Same with a workbench.
One screwdriver. No more.
Or your Solara will forever meet the morning dew.

I'm leaning towards this shelving rack from Costco for storage. The cost is very reasonable and it is a large rack. http://www.costco.com/Alera-Industrial-W...17555.html

I'm not sure what to do about the workbench though. I'm not someone that does a LOT of work at my bench but I do use it. Mostly my drill, dremel, vice etc. I could just get a standard length of laminate countertop and build a very basic wood frame under it. Something like this http://www.lowes.com/pd_69180-12996-9277...d=50162897&Ntt=laminate+counter&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNtt%3Dlaminate%2Bcounter&facetInfo= . Any other ideas?

If you're interested in shelving that you can design to fit the available space, I've used this Bulk Storage Rack, it's very industrial looking and similar to warehouse pallet rack, but lighter duty. But still very sturdy, built like a brick shithouse, can hold several tons of stuff, you can climb it without any fear. I went with particle board inserts for the actual shelf that fits perfectly flush in the metal frame/supports.

Takes a bit of understanding of how the various pieces are put together and their dimensions to figure what you need and what will fit.

I went for this after first looking at some metal shelving units from Costco and the various home stores, and felt that they were too limiting as far as size went. This was much more configurable and much higher quality. It was local enough to me that I picked up the order, so I don't know what shipping might cost. There might be a similar place local to you if you decide on this type of product.

The downside is that it's totally open, no backs, sides or doors, and the bottom shelf is the garage floor, although I did put some thin particle board down on the floor to form a cleaner bottom shelf to all things to slide easier.

I used 4x4's for posts and 2x4's around the outsides of the 4x4's at the top and then inside the 4x4's a foot from the floor, then a 3/4 BC plywood top and for a shelf. I beefed up the right front corner with some 2x4 pieces to be able to mount a vise. The whole thing is 5x3 feet. Pretty cheap and strong as can be. And it doesn't matter if I beat it up.

Those bulk storage racks are incredibly strong and versatile. They are more expensive but, can be taken with you should you move (if you wanted to). Warehouse clubs sell heavy duty, rolling tool chests that give you a good start on tool storage. I've seen some that have sturdy wood tops which would give you a starting workbench.

Lowes has ( had ? ) heavy duty storage shelves with various length vertical and horizontal components and at least two choices of shelf material. I bought some of the wire shelving and just happened to have a selection of green and brown board leftover from building the garage that was perfect for shelves.
I'd link to it but I'm not sifting thru the usual 82 pages of Lowes search results not to find what I'm looking for.
