iPad Air only charging to 2%...any ideas why?
#1
Last week my wife's iPad Air decided it would not charge past the 2% mark for no apparent reason. It had been working completely fine prior to that. No damage/drops etc. Bought it new at Target in Nov. 2013 so it's a bit out of warranty. Used a trade in credit from an iPad 1 and put balance on a credit card so I'm not sure about extended warranty through card.

She took it to Apple genius bar and they didn't know what was going on (nor did it sound like they were very helpful. I believe they said it would be $200 to fix
  • We've tried multiple chargers/cords that work with all of our other iDevices to no avail
  • There's no lint or debris in the lightning port
  • I can connect it to my mac and am able to sync as long as it happens quickly before it dies
  • I have erased and reset to factory defaults and upgraded OS to current
Battery issues? Connectors? Voodoo? Very frustrating...

No direct help -- are you near another apple store? take it to that one instead. Or try the apple store and get a different genius.

Was thinking the same thing. We're within about 20 miles of four or five apple stores. Also have a neighbor that I run into walking the dog that is a Genius at the local store. Perhaps I'll "bump" into him soon.

-Are you using the higher output iPad charger?

-Have you tried charging the iPad with it turned off?

-What vintage mac are you using? The USB ports on older macs are lower powered. My iPad mini first gen would claim to not be charging when hooked up to my early 2008 iMac.

-Have you tried a hard reboot of the iPad? Hold down the power and home buttons until the Apple logo shows up.

I've tried two higher output iPad chargers as well as 3-4 iPhone chargers to no avail
I have tried it with iPad turned off as it dies on it's own
2012 iMac with USB3
A couple of hard reboots as you described as well as a full reset/wipe of the device.

I'll look through that thread to see if there's anything I missed.

Have you tried whacking it with a nine iron?

We had exactly the same issue with an original iPad. And I left it to charge for a WEEK. And somehow that fixed it. I assume there was something wonky with the battery sensor / charging circuit. No idea why.... Magic ?

Bought mrs. cbelt3 an ipad Mini, so the iPad was rolled down to one of the kids, where the LCD went kaflooie after some months. Someone here got the carcass.

cbelt has it.

I ran into this with my iPad 3 recently, after letting the battery die out and not using it for a week. When I tried charging it again, it would only charge to a couple of percent, and then restarted itself.

Use the original charger, use an original cable. If you can get it turned on, manually turn it off so it doesn't try to enter the restart cycle again.

Plug it in for 2+ days, and then try again. Should be better.

The charging circuit that regulates how much juice/how much the battery can hold, needs to be reset/recalibrated. As far as I know just letting it charge is the only way to do this.
