My 5S performs just fine. But there's one little thing that bugs me. The little red dot that indicates how many of my apps that need updating never goes off. Or it goes off very rarely.
For example The App Store icon indicates that I have 4 apps that need updating. However, NONE of my apps need updating. I've gone into the App Store and verified that all my apps are up to date but it still says I have 4 apps that need updating.

Maybe the apps need to be updated after you update/change iOS. Other possible causes. A restart is in order. Delete and re download the apps. Hard reset with home and power button.

It goes away if i restart. But it happens as soon as an app needs updating. And it happens with any app. Any app that needs updating anyway.

Have you just tried killing the app?

The App Store app? I usually don't keep it running.

Turn off App Store badges in the notification options.

For some reason. starting in iOS 8, the App Store badge never goes away, even if all apps are up to date.
It's annoying unless it's turned off.

Possibly some apps needed updating, but when you updated to the latest iOS those apps aren't able to run on the latest OS so those apps are stuck in limbo.

You may have apps that are not installed and those have updates available. Just a guess.
