Sources for toy wheels, axles, car parts...?

My son came up with this idea to build his own cars. So I am trying to translate those to reality. The basic idea I've got right now is to get a sheet of pegboard, and cut it into roughly 4"x10" rectangles. From that, attach some sort of wheels to it. Above that, use bolts, nuts and whatever else he comes up with to assemble the rest.

To a large extent, think of this as a home made erector set.

I'm trying to find wheels. There's wooden hobby wheels, but I still need to find axels and some way to attach those to the frame of the car. Another option are pinewood derby car wheels, but again I'd need axles as the nails probably wouldn't cut it on their own.

Any suggestions on where to find parts? We've been to Home Depot and a large hobby/craft store. Plus I've been googling and searching Amazon.

The 4th one down for me is Pinewood Derby Dry Graphite with Moly additive. But I see your search. I don't want a pinewood derby car. My son wants to create something for a craft fair that he can sell. So we're thinking some sort of "build your own car" type of kit.

I found a couple of RC stores, but they wanted about $15-$20 for just 4 bare rims.

I guess I was typing my reply up when you mentioned craft fair. Carving wheels is pretty advanced for his age, so the packs of hundreds for about $20 on ebay would be a good start. Axels could just be round head brass wood screws that have the top 1/4 smooth without threads.

A broom handle can be sawed into disks, which make wheels. Drill holes in them, attach with common nails and maybe washers, and you're all set.

Thanks all. I had looked into most of those ideas already. The hardware store wheels tend to be expensive... if I want the final product to have $5-10 in parts per vehicle.

For the axles, right now I'm leaning towards something like http://www.mcmaster.com/#90034a051/=ztu5aa and then I can cut them to length. I'll put http://www.mcmaster.com/#90631a009/=ztu640 on the ends. That's about 35¢ for one car. Then maybe something like this to run the rod through and mount to the chassis http://www.mcmaster.com/#corner-brackets/=ztu7zh though, I don't think those holes are big enough and they'd add about $2 per vehicle.

I could try a straight steel rod, but I'd need to find something to put on the ends to keep the wheels on http://www.mcmaster.com/#8920k115/=ztub0t

Or I could get rubber tires and they'd just stay on, like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Meccano-Erector-...51d2c4aed0 but I can only find about a dozen on ebay, and I need 40+
