Crazy Internet trouble
#1
All of a sudden, my iMac (still on 10.5.8 for another few -weeks?...) will not load any Google or Yahoo page, or this MR forum! in either Safari (v 5.x.x) or Firefox (v 3.x.x). Just get a blank white page that never loads. These sites were all fine an hour or so before. I can only visit those sites if using the iPad -which is using wifi on the same network.

Other sites I have checked like the NYTimes, continue to work fine on both iMac browsers...

How to fix?

First rebooted, no change.
Then I flushed the DNS cache in Terminal (a couple of times), Still cannot go to those sites mentioned in Safari, but a few others like craiglist come right up, some others work but don't want to stop loading.

I got to this forum to type this post presently in FF, but still can't get to Yahoo. Google at first came up, but would not open any page there from a google search. Now I cannot get Google again.

Ps. I don't know how to deal w/firewall whatsoever I use the U-Verse wifi router and just let it do it's thing.

Installed any funny apps lately?

Intego and other lame AV apps have garbage firewall software that is well known to block legit sites and sometimes ALL sites when it malfunctions (which is often).

Otherwise... Malware scan:

No, I haven't installed anything. Tried to install the Malware thing in your link, it won't install on 10.5.

Google came up -one time- on Safari after at least 1-2 mins loading wait, but would not search anything. I since have got Google to load on FF, and a simple search took minutes to appear, and it won't go to any of the search result pages from the Google links.

Very irritating.

Since you're on AT&T, I wouldn't overlook their network being the issue.

And the U-Verse RGs are adequate, but no more, running crappy firmware that breaks stuff after they push updates out.

What happens if you enter the IPs to the troubled sites directly?

Ahh... Missed that part. Yeah. can't run a scan on less than 10.7.x... Which is why I find myself manually uninstalling Genieo off of every 3rd 10.6.x Mac I come across.

Still, 'seems that you've got something blocking those sites. Maybe malware, but no easy way to figure out what you've got unless you see a new toolbar in Firefox.

...Maybe your ISP's DNS is wonky today. Tried changing the DNS setting in your Mac's Network pre'fs to 8.8.8.8 yet?

Google has recently announced it will no longer support old browsers, but I cannot remember the versions. Yahoo may be doing the same, and those two websites may have had maintenance updates rendering those old browsers ineffective.

TenFourFox is the browser to use on PowerPC, but I'm not sure what you can do on Intel Leopard. Run TenFourFox in Rosetta?
