I am appalled at how poorly the police here in Seattle follow the traffic laws. If I drove the way they do, I'd lose my license.

IF traffic laws are for our safety, why don't they follow them?

I agree, but how did she know there was no true emergency?

If there were, they are required to run lights and/or siren. Universal protocol with law enforcement unless rolling up to a stealth operation. My uncle was a police detective.

In Seattle, 10 over is mandatory lights unless ordered to go silent/stealth by dispatch. Then there is a record of it.

We had a motorcycle cop living in my neighborhood when I was growing up. He was a worse traffic offender than the kids he pulled over.

I have a lot of appreciation for law enforcement, but not that much respect for those who live by "Do as I say, not as I do"

I remember hearing that California had similar rules for most law enforcement. A minimum of lights flashing for over 10 mph above the posted speed limit. If an officer got in an accident on duty while speeding, they better have been on record as involved in a chase or responding to an emergency with lights on.

As an aside, I have a friend who is a paramedic. They too, have to be using lights and sirens going 10+ over the limit. With them, no exceptions.

Miami cops seem to often run speedily to work.

(Pursuit for the first seven minutes, real fun starts at 7:00)

The officer probably wouldn't have stopped for her if that was the case.

Once, when I was in a sheriff's car, the driver made a personal call on his sell phone, typed on the qwerty keyboard on the car's computer, and then sped up to 85mph in a 40mph zone. He knew another deputy was on speed trap duty with a radar gun, and did it just to mess with him.
