I have gotten paranoid over the hyper vigilant do gooders who think any dog left alone in a car needs to be rescued and the owner trashed. Without knowing how long the dog has been alone in the car. And they get the dog all excited by approaching the car causing more panting and using that as an excuse that the dog was in distress. Yes, there are some real cases out there, and I'd be one to bust a window if a dog was clearly in distress, but we do have a bunch of people acting needlessly for self serving reasons.
My dog and I travel a lot and cannot potty in the same location so I have to make pit stops. It's safest for me to avoid the hyper vigilant to stop at a rest area. But that is not always possible. Sometimes I have to stop at a food place. Makes me paranoid as heck. I'm afraid every time I run out of the bathroom to my vehicle that someone is going to be out there trying to break into my car.

There you go being reasonable Pam
Have you thought about leaving a note advising do-gooders that you're getting fresh water for your pet and will be back shortly? That might reassure them that you're a caring owner rather than an inconsiderate monster.

I get your concern about people over reacting, but what is "self serving" in their actions?
You know, the I'm the hero, attention and or control seeking type. It's not the person genuinely concerned, using common sense.

My dog is in a kennel in the back of my jeep. I pop open the hatch window and leave a fan running that pulls the still cool air from the front to her kennel. Water bowl has water and I also have a thermometer hanging inside of her kennel. It's a transK9 kennel, not a wire kennel. A reasonable person would see that this is a well attended to dog. I don't crack other windows (thus letting the cool air out and warming the car up faster).
Some in our community have had problems with the so-called well intended when they left the dogs in their cars, with the engine running, and the a/c on while they ate nearby.

Wait, what now? Like a picnic?
They were at a food place that had some outdoor benches and tables. Rather than eat inside their vehicles or on the hoods they sat nearby.
