I know you may think I am lying thru my teeth but I have never had a hard drive die on me while in use. I have two externals for back up and the other day one starts to click and the icon disappears from my desktop. Can't make it return to the desktop so I figure my streak just came to an end. It's a 1TB Samsung 3.5" drive and I'm ready to pack it away but I thought I'd do an experiment. I have a NewerTech Universal Drive Adapter USB 3.0 that I haven't used and I remove the 1TB from it's case and hook everything up the NT, press the switch and it's alive! I'll buy an enclosure from our sponsor as there are a lot of wires and it's too clunky to leave in the adapter.
But my record remains unbroken!

I have only once spent money on a big name external. I prefer to buy the drive I want and put it into a decent enclosure. I just recently took apart a 2.5" Seagate external that the Other Human had acquired. Crappy enclosure that was difficult to open. I put the drive in a little Oyen Digital enclosure and the drive works fine in there.

When you do, there's medication ;-)

Don't forget the Boy Toy option.

Ka Jowct,
Keep an eye on the Oyen Digital USB 3.0 enclosure. I tried some of their boxes and had continuous issues with them. Returned them in favor of models from different brands.

I think that most external drive failures are due to the power supply or board failure and NOT the hard drive itself.

Good to know. So far this seems like a good one: sturdy metal, and can accommodate a 15mm drive. The shoddily-housed 1TB Seagate was 15mm, so my options were extremely limited.
Maybe Paul F can chime in on how his 4-bay Oyen enclosure has held up.
