Wireless computer can't see shared printer. WTH?
#1
Hi Friends,

I've got a small home network consisting of a Quicksilver PowerMac (10.3.9) with a Samsung USB printer connected to it, behind a Netgear MR314 Wireless Router. An iBook is connected to the network via wireless AirPort card.

For the past few years, we've been printing wirelessly over the network. Suddenly, we are no longer able to print from the iBook. It does not "see" the Samsung over the network. The iBook does connect to the internet and iChat via the network, so we know the network connection is working. The Quicksilver prints directly to the Samsung, as always.

I'm stumped here and would appreciate any suggestions or assistance in reestablishing printing connection from the iBook.

Thanks,

SR

My guess is, something has happened to your ability to use AppleTalk..

Either it got turned "off" on the iBook, or for some reason the route stopped "passing" AppleTalk...

Now, I'm also ASSUMING that the printer is an AppleTalk device...
If it's not, disregard this "clue".

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip. The printer is a Samsung ML-1450 Postscript USB printer. Don't believe it is AppleTalk, but not sure of this.

Have you tried going to your Printer Setup Utility, deleting that printer, and then re-adding it?

That will also tell you if it's being "seen" as a Rendezvous device, or an AppleTalk one...

Hi,

I deleted and readded ithe printer on the host computer.

When I go to the iBook and try to add ithe Samsung, it is not showing up on either the Rendezvous or AppleTalk list (although there are a few Rendezvous printers on the list, maybe neighbors's printers?). I'm pretty sure that this was previously connected via Rendezvous.

Problem is that the iBook cannot see this printer via Rendezvous.

Thanks,

BTW, iChat is working over Rendezvous...

Repair permissions on both Macs and try turning off the OS X firewalls on both Macs.

Did you try disabling and re-enabling printer sharing? I have had things drop out and fixed it this way before.

If you say you're able to get on the internet and you are seeing what appears to be your neighbor's printers, is it possible you are not on your network?

Thanks, MM.

Did as you suggested and turned off software firewalls. The iBook showed several repairs having to do with printing.

When I finished repairing permissions, iBook showed a whole host of printers in the Rendezvous list, but none of them were the ones connected to my Quicksilver.

Where to go from here?
