It could be worse: you could be trapped on the Coast Starlight

183 passengers headed from Seattle to LA have been stuck in the train in the mountains south of Eugene since Sunday, over 30 hours. Nearly a foot of snow has fallen in southern Oregon and the tracks are blocked by snow and fallen trees.
They had enough food to last until this morning and fortunately the electricity in the train is still on. Passengers say it's been a big "kumbaya party."

Amtrak said just a few minutes ago that the train is reversing back north now but it will be slow going. The passengers can't be picked up by buses because all local roads are blocked. This is record snow for that area, they usually get around one inch in February, not a foot.

A foot? Seriously, get a shovel! We had that last week and still had school every day.

I took that train in winter once. The route was closed south of Eugene so they detoured over to Bend OR, then up to the Columbia River and down to Portland. It was a 22 hour trip from Redding to Seattle.

Yikes!
The last train journey I had, someone in the neighboring sleeper was complaining in the hallway loudly, constantly, and bitterly for hours and hours about a 45 minute delay. I can't imaging what 30 hours would have been like.

The sound of a loud "thump", a door opening and closing, and then quiet, most likely...

My friend who lives in Seattle...
She loves train travel.
Fortunately, she's not on THIS one, but it's the kind of pleasure trip she'd take.

If it hadn't gotten stopped by snow, I bet the scenery would have been spectacular.

I have wanted to take the trip from L.A. to Seattle (and many others) but just haven't quite gotten around to it.
