It seems like only yesterday when a container of orange juice went from 64 ounces down to 59.

I'm currently in central Florida. OJ prices here are crazy high (IMHO). Sheez, the damned fruit is grown here; transportation costs are MUCH lower than say markets that are hundreds (or thousands) of miles away. That and, the oranges grow on trees! It's not like they're made of gold. Then, as already mentioned, consumers are shorted on quantity. :villagers:

Without pasteurization and storage in these cold high-pressure vessels with a reduced oxygen environment, the OJ would spoil in a week or so. Instead, it can be stored for over a year with a few significant consequences: Of note, the flavor disappears and the color tends towards brown. As a result, chemists formulate flavor and color packets tailored to those brands/trends that they want to highlight, including seasonal variations. What I'm getting at is that it hardly matters where the oranges come from anymore or whether a particular harvest goes bad from frost or whatever. It all comes from a tank. And pricing is more about how far you are from the vats than how far you are from the groves.

I've had OJ start fermenting in the fridge after a month or so.

Just eat oranges. I stopped buying orange juice a long time ago, the last couple of times we bought it was at Costco. It was pretty inexpensive there compared to the regular markets. We bought it to make mimosas. The previous time we purchased was to make sex on the beach drinks.

Orange Juice would never last a month or so in my fridge. A gallon would be lucky to make it a week. Just eat oranges. I stopped buying orange juice a long time ago The last orange juice I bought was some time ago - Tropicana if I remember correctly. It was the one version that exactly match fresh squeeze an had at an inn in Carmel. Very good. Unfortunately, I have trouble finding really good, sweet oranges so the effort to enjoy one always feels wasted.
