forget WiFi 802.11AC, questions about MoCA
#1
I would like to use existing coax cable to run wired network upstairs using MoCA adapters

1) I already have a TiVO which I believe has MoCA capabilities. I imagine this is only to get "network" signal into the TiVO via the coax cable, I don't think there is any chance to use the TiVO as one of the MoCA adapter to send singla upstairs, is it? if that would be possible, that would recuce my cost in half since I have to buy only one box.

2) Question about the actual setup: the COAX cable comes into the house and there is a splitter inside the drywall which send signal to downstairs and upstairs. I have seen the splitter when the Comcast repair main was here last tear, but I do not want and I cannot easily access this splitter.

Right now the stup is like this:

Inside drywall: Main Coax able -> Splitter -> Branch A and Branch B

Downstairs: Branch A into splitter -> TiVO and Comcast Modem

Upstairs: Branch B sitting idle

If I get 2 MoCA, I know what do to uypstairs; coact cable into MoCA, and from there Ethernet to Mini.

I am not sure how to connect it downstairs: after the cable modem, ethernet would go into the router, from there into a network switch, and from there into a MoCA. How exactly do I connect the Coax back into the MoCA? would

Would I put the MoCA in front of the Cable Modem?

Thanks

The cable modem would connect to the coax line coming into your home. The MoCA adapter would connect to the cable modem over Ethernet. The MoCA adapter would then connect to the household coax. A second MoCA adapter would connect between the coax line in the room with the Mac mini and the Mac mini, itself.

Note that cable TV signals sometimes need to be actively filtered to coexist with MoCA signals on the same lines so this *may* not work if you need to push TV signals on the same lines. Also, your splitters need to be two-way and up to recent standards in order to work with MoCA adapters. You may need to replace one or more splitters. And you'll need to split the coax going to each TV or set top box in a room where you want to place a MoCA adapter, so will need compliant splitters for that purpose.

...

I'm curious why you aren't considering Powerline Ethernet.

Incoming cable into router. Ethernet from router into LAN port on the MoCA, MoCA into branch B of COAX. Branch B COAX to second MoCA, and then LAN port to ethernet input of the second computer.

It's very similar to Powerline adapters but you are using the COAX instead of the AC line.

First question to answer - Does your TiVo have a built in Moca adapter? My TiVo Bolt does.

Second question - Can you use the TiVo Moca adapter for used another than distributing TiVo information between TiVo boxes? I don't know, but would be interested in the answer...

here is what I have... and what I think I should do. But I am still unclear if this is the proper way to inject MoCA signal back into the main Coax so it goes upstairs.

forget the TiVO or the network switch for the moment. I need to figure out if this plan would work. Then I can deal with the switch myself later.

Do you get TV from comcast? Or just internet?

If you get TV, I don't think you can do that. If so, where is the cable modem in your setup?

you're right, I forgot there is another splitter INSIDE THE HOUSE, which I have access to, so downstairs I have A1 (into modem, the one show above) and A2 into the TiVO (A2 and TiVo are not shown at all).

I will probably update this picture at some point, it's getting late and I cannot do it tonight...
