Have Any Architecture Nerds Been Following This Besides Me?
#1
Salt Lake City Airport has been undergoing a massive renovation/redevelopment project for the last few years. Basically they're building an entirely new terminal to replace the existing one, the stated reason being that the current one is not designed or rated for earthquake resistance, but I suspect the fact that the current terminal is a chopped-up mess that has been expanded multiple times might play a large part in the decision to replace it with a far more modern, cohesive, and easily expandable structure as well.

Anyway, the whole process from below ground upwards has been beautifully documented in photos from the start- https://slcairport.com/thenewslc/rebuild-progress-gallery/

They seem to be at the point now where they have to get the incomplete-but-fully-functional new terminal, particularly the new parking structure, up and running before they can begin tearing down parts of the old terminal to make room for completion of the new one.

On the one hand, I've never heard of Utah being at high risk for earthquakes.

On the other hand, where there are mountains there are faults... and there are mountains in Utah.

I thought the same thing, but hey, whatever excuse gets the ball rolling.

Why do it that way.
SAT built a new terminal, named it Terminal 1, named the old one Terminal 2.

Then tore down the old one, replaced with Terminal A, and renamed the former new one Terminal B.

Not confusing at all...:RollingEyesSmiley5:

Don't ask a New Yorker about the insanely inconvenient and painful rebuilding of LaGuardia Airport ('The Third World In Your World')

The next two will be named Terminal 1 and Terminal 10. Confusedmiley-laughing001:

That sort of thing seems to be pretty common when airports expand or renovate.

When the South Terminal opens it will have a new Concourse A as the west wing and the existing Concourse A, Terminals 1 and 2, Concourse E, and the existing parking structure will be torn down to make room for further construction of of the east wing which I assume will be called (the new) Concourse B.

Reminds me just a little of building the new Yankee Stadium...
