How to change the name of the Admin/shortname
#1
Just helped a friend switch with a used PBook 12", purchased from a local Apple store employee. Normally, I wipe the drive and reinstall everything, but he stripped everything out except the basic install stuff.

However, there's still his User name and Short Name as the Admin, and I'd like to see if I can change it without doing a complete reinstall.

Is there a way to just change the Admin name and Short Name?

Add new user with admin access-then delete the old user

macosxhints.com is your friend.

But you confuse us: what do you mean you can't format and start all over? Are you telling us that an Apple store employee sold you a machine without the machine's own restore disk?

Did you bump the price down $130 or so to accommodate buying a new copy of Tiger?

Came with Tiger discs, Elmo. No discount needed. I can format and start over, of course. Just wanted to know if there was a way around it. Sounds like there is with the above examples. Thanks, all!

"Nuke and Pave" is gonna avoid a whole bunch of future headaches!
Even brand new out of the box, I format and install fresh.

Man, I think you're right, BG, it's how I always do it, too. I'm going to take a chance with Ken's suggestion (Add new user with admin access-then delete the old user), rebuild permissions, run all the Onyx repairs, and throw caution to the wind. This is a gal that will only use Mail, Safari, and Word.

Nuke and Pave is better...

But making a new Admin user, and deleting the old will probably work just fine.

change short name works well when the user account is loaded with files, prefs, etc... but for a new account, i like the creation of a new account & deletion of the old one.

Yeah, it seemed to work well here as well.
