hello there,

Good old Powerbook and i have been going thru hell and are not back yet. maybe someone can help out.

To cut to the chase, please see the console log below. All I seem to be able to do at this point is launch mail and firefox, and even write and send email!!! No photoshop, no copying files over to my newly connected OWC firewire drive, lots of no-nos's. I've tried running disk utility tto repair permissions and it won't let me do that, as well as update with the 10.3.9 combo: it goes through the intal and tells me at the end that there was an errror and to try again which I've done a million times.

i'm on a titanium that's 4 years old.

And by the way I no longer have the install disks for this powerbook!

2. Try creating a new User account, and see if the problem persists.

3. Pull any RAM you installed.

I very much doubt that you have a simple problem with a plist file.

More likely, there's a drive problem.

Follow the directions from this link, first rebooting in Safe Mode to run the Disk Utility and if that does not work, run the fsck utility from Single User Mode.

i followed your recommendations and the result is below. meanwhile i still can't get iphoto to open all the way, it opens and then the folders show up on the left but the photos don't seem to load and then iphoto crashes.

Don't just repair permissions on your startup drive. Repair the disk.

It's a different button in the Disk Utility.

1. You need to run Disk Utility to repair the HD--repairing permissions isn't likely to be the problem.

2. You're saying that you already:

A. Did a Safe Boot, and then restarted

B. Booted from the CD or DVD, and ran Disk Utility from it, and repaired the HD?

If you've already done both of those, let us know. If you haven't done them, then do them, and restart from the HD. Try putting in a new User account, and see if you still have the problem.

ok, here's what i have done.

1. i started in safe boot and repaired disk utilities in safe mode.

2. because i don't have the intaller disk with disk utility, i went ahead and started in single user mode and ran fsck. at the end it said it had repired the disk successfully.

3. meanwhile, i still can't open iphoto with success. i can open addressbook, but it is empty, and i'm looking for help on how to reload my addressbook.

4. finally, i have had an intermittent incident which is that multiple lines, horizontal and vertical, sometimes crowd the screen increasingly. usually i can shut down the powerbook, give a couple minutes and restart and all is back to "normal." i've been told by a local mac repair shop that it is mostt likely the motherboard. any input on this?

1 - Did it report any unrepairable errors? Did it report that it repaired anything specifically?

2 - A good sign that it's not a failing drive. Did it report that it repaired anything specifically?

3 - Whatever the cause, you appear to have lost data on your drive. With luck, it's going to have been mostly pref's files and perhaps a few data files like your address book database file.

Try creating a new user in your Accounts preferences and see if that when you log in to that user account you have regained the ability to launch your applications.

4 - Yes, that could be a motherboard issue. Sometimes that symptom comes from a component overheating and sometimes it comes from a pinched video cable where it passes through the hinge of the LCD and sometimes it is a sign that a major component such as the motherboard is cracked from an impact or about to die from some random failure due to age.
