Router and Dial-up Question
#1
okay, now don't laugh. a friend of mine wants to know if she can utilize wireless by plugging her dial up modem into a router. she has a desktop and a lap top. she's checking to see if her laptop even has wireless capability.

i said don't laugh, dammit!

some folks are a little slow moving to broadband. all things in time. meanwhile, would it still work?

Apple Airport BaseStation, I forgot if all or older one did.

I tried to keep a straight face.

only an Apple Airport BaseStation would work with dial-up or any router (assuming it had a phone jack instead of ethernet jack, i guess)?

Yup needs a modem (dialup). I dont know of any dialup modems that are wireless besides the ABS.

The Apple BaseStations with the built-in modem.
This will do it.:

Can I just add that this is a really dumb idea?

Tell your friend to check with her DSL or cable provider and ask about "Lite" versions of the usual high-speed service. Same price as dialup, but at least 10x the speed.

I did it for a few years at my house where dial up was the only option.

Graphite base station with modem. It was nice because I could make the base station dial up with out having the desktop awake.

I tried with some luck for a short time to share the modem in the desktop over a netgear but it was very flaky. I switched to the airport and it just worked.

I have the thing sitting in a box if it is of interest to you. I now have DSL/netgear.
