Can I get a Dumpster Leader? Another free iMac falls into my hands…

…nearly crushing them.

But seriously: I was taking some cardboard boxes out for recycling today when I saw two guys walking along with a blue iMac. They were heading for the large dumpster in front of our buildings. I asked if they were throwing it out and they said they were. One guy said it had been given to him. Apparently he was only keeping the keyboard. They asked me if I wanted it. I suggested that they put it on top of a trash can instead of throwing it into the dumpster, to see if anyone would take it, which they did. They told me it worked but that it was "old". I could see that it was slot-loading and had FW ports, so it seemed possible that ti wasn't a total waste of time.

A few minutes later the blue iMac was still there, so I took another look at it. I checked the RAM and there were two sticks installed. So I hauled it upstairs, figuring I could at least salvage the RAM.

I fired it up and discovered that it is a 500MHz model with 16MB of VRAM, a 20GB hard drive and 192MB of RAM. The monitor is bright and sharp and the CD-ROM drive seems to work OK. Contents include ProTools Free 5, Quark 4.1, and a large font collection. It's quite snappy with 9.2.2; I will install Panther when I have a bit more RAM in it.

Not bad for a freebie. But I think it means I really have to put the poor old Bondi out to die.

I'll pay for shipping on the Bondi . . . I have one here that I can't rescue fully. Would like it "whole" again . . .
