I think I'm going to buy a lottery ticket

I opened up my classical guitar case, and my 4th and 5th strings were broken.

I don't think Ive ever seen something like this before.

One string on occasion, but two? No

How do they break in the case?

I've never had a broken string when I wasn't stringing or playing.

Yes, broken strings on a nylon guitar are quite rare, even when playing or tuning them.

that's nuts - if this was a horror movie, I'd take that as a really bad omen.

Not sure about a lottery ticket... perhaps beef up insurance coverage instead.

You must have very hungry roaches.

I keep the case humidified. Could that be a cause?

Got one of those humidifiers that squeezes between the strings?

No, it's built into the underside of the top of the case.

I was using high tension strings though. I think I'll restring with some medium tension strings. I've got a few different sets of Aquila strings laying around.
