I finally updated the firmware on my Mac Pro 5,1

I finally went to 144.0.0.0.0 and didn't even brick it. Confusedmiley-gen013:

Now I just have to decide if I want to upgrade to Mojave or stay with High Sierra.

Yeah, I need to do that. I'm still on Sierra though. I may do it when I finally get a new M2 mini, or whatever the next iteration is called. I'll update it, then upgrade the OS, then sell it.

At which point the MP will be worth $150.

Strongly recommend the NVME SSD Route--triple the speed compared with the SATA SSD.

Curious about the NVME route. With the technology in the 5,1, will they be able to truly take advantage of the speed? It would have to be on a PCIE card, right? Is there enough bandwidth there in the older technology? I don't know the answer to that. I have a 4,1 flashed to a 5,1 and taking advantage of better RAM and CPUs than was possible in the 4,1.

NVME on a PCIe card is definitely faster. I personally don't see the need. It's not like I sit around and lament my 2.5" SSD (also on a PCIe card) as being too slow. Then again, maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

A while back when my SSD died and I had to replace it would have been the time to switch to NVME, except I just wanted to get the machine back up ASAP and I walked into to Best Buy and bought a replacement. I didn't want to wait for something to be shipped plus I had old firmware that I didn't want to futz with at the time.

I was on Sierra for quite a while. The upgrade to H.S. was painless and I think it runs a little better.

(have done two cMPs so far.)

For me, moving to the NVME SSD was the difference between "Hey, this SSD makes my Mac Ok to use" with the SATA SSD and "Hey, this is fun again!" It's the not having to wait an extra second or three for apps to open, or stuff to happen.

Again, this is triple the speed of the SATA SSD.

It's certainly YMMV, and that was true for me.

I like Mojave. I was hesitant because of the video card thing on the Mac Pro 5,1. But I just realized I've been using my Metal-compatible video card (an RX560) on High Sierra for a good while so I don't have a reason not to upgrade to Mojave now.

(The RX560 will only work with 10.13.6 or newer. If I want to go back to an OS before High Sierra for whatever reason, I will have to swap out the video card.)
