I'm thinking about getting a set for this feature alone. Tons cheaper and more convenient than regular hearing aids, that I don't "technically" need according to the audiologist two years ago, but would be helpful in conversation scenarios where there is background noise. High frequency deafness runs in my family.

I haven’t used it but I think it’s a great idea, and based on how transparency mode works, it will be good.
Transparency mode, by the way, makes the surrounding ambient sound a little more present and clear.
It works on AirPods Pro and Max, I think.
Although it can be done manually, the Mimi hearing app has a hearing test that ultimately discharges the curve of your hearing to health app, and can be used to compensate your deficiencies with eq.
Amazing…

I have hearing loss, and conversations in noisy environments is the worst arena for me.
I just updated my iPhone to ios15 and will now try with my AirPods Pro. But not sure I’m heading to crowded rooms anytime soon… I have an airplane trip ahead, that might be the next real life test but will report.

cbelt3-
i wound up running the test you wanted. I had a genius appointment for my imac at the apple store and though i had forgotten to put my hearing aid (left ear only) in before i left i did have my updated airpod pros with me so i decided to dig them out. i had already done the setting for customizing transparency.
cavernous store with lots of people and music playing are not fun for me. i had to play with the transparency settings reducing ambient noise almost 100%, raising the volume, and increasing the brightness. I also turned on conversation boost. I was able to converse with my son and though I still lost a few words I also was able to communicate easily with the technician.
i think i would have gotten even better result with the tech if I had turned on Live Listen and put the iphone on the table near him. If you already have airpods i think you have access to that feature as it's been around for awhile. i've never used it in social situation because it looks weird to have airpods in your ears in that setting.
If you're looking for something to help you in social situation and people would be accepting of you wearing airpod pros at a gathering I think they would do what you're thinking. Try them out for two weeks and if they don't work as you imagine return them. frankly, buy them from Costco and you'll have longer than two weeks to test them.
hope this helps.
