The Washington Football Team's new name may be the .....

The Washington Football team is slated to reveal its new nickname on Wednesday.

One franchise great talked about a potential name on Monday as if it was a done deal. Joe Theismann discussed the topic in an interview with CBS Sports Radio.

"I think the Commanders is a name that is gonna be hopefully one people talk about moving forward," Theismann said. "There were so many different options. Once again, it's trademark infringement. It's getting approval from different people. If you choose a name, is there a group out there that isn't gonna like it? There's so many things you have to consider."

Theisman unconvincingly tried to walk back his statement later, saying he has no idea what the name will be.

I don't envy name choosers, Impossible to please everyone. These days, even random strings of letters are trademarked by the CAPTCHA people.

While I agree the previous name was derogatory, I'm curious where this ends. Vikings are named after a type of people from a specific geographic location. Chiefs... well that should be obvious, especially with the logo. Buccaneers and Raiders promote lawlessness and piracy. Giants are medical condition. Jets promote the use of fossil fuels. Steelers promote a non-renewable resource. Browns are named after a guy with questionable ethics and business practices.

It all started with the Washington Bullets. Changing the name to the ridiculous Wizards solved gun violence and its all moved forward into the bright future ever since.

Maybe they should all have to be named after animals.
That seems simple enough.

Approved on January 31, 1967, the Wood Thrush, a medium-sized thrush with the posture of an American Robin, but a slightly smaller body, became the District of Columbia official Bird.
