Hi all,
Quick question...I've never done this before but I am using Cyberduck to ftp a friend's e-commerce website down to my computer. (Long story) It's only 30 Megs in size but the download is taking an awfully long time. In fact, it's taken about 20 minutes to transfer 203.5 kb. Is this normal?

If you're downloading, why not just use a web browser? Type in the address of the file. For instance, if you're downloading a file called "file.zip" then type in: "ftp://www.friendsserver.com/file.zip" It'll most likely prompt you for a username and password. You really only need an FTP client on a Mac to upload to a server.

LOL!
Note that I've never done this before corollary. hehehe
In any case, her contract with her current host is finishing this Saturday and she is thinking of switching (they went down for over a month one time and she lost EVERYTHING). I told her to get everything off before her contract was up or else they may simply delete her files.
But, why is the transfer so slow?

no idea about databases...I simply selected all three folders that were there (they had tons of stuff inside) and hit download. Will that be good enough?
Don't worry about the host...she went with the people who developed her website. But, it sounds like they may not have explained what "hosting" is and they may be thinking that she doesn't have the resources to transfer everything out.

Have you decided on a new host yet?
On jdc's advice, I just moved a client's site to HostRocket. So far I'm impressed, although I've only been doing business with them for a few weeks. The couple of times I had questions, the response was quick and helpful.
For half the monthly cost of our previous hosting, we have the same or better services and capabilities, and a much better webmail interface. If I am still happy with HostRocket in August, I will move a second client to HostRocket.

Not a clue about FTP...
However, there's an app called "Site Sucker" that may be useful for you..
It's mission in life to is download an entire site.
I found it useful having to do a full backup of a site I was about to overhaul...
Hope this helps in some way!

KJ...well, her site is so small and she's on a very low budget so I am suggesting A Small Orange's Tiny plan for her.
Paul...thanks for the suggestion but Site Sucker needs 10.4 and I only have 10.3.9.

How small a site and how low a budget? The sale at HostPC is on until 2/28. I just renewed with them at $25/yr. for 1GB space and 10GB bandwidth.
