Walgreens to shutter many stores
#1
Seems like every grocery store has opened a pharmacy. Too bad the competition in pharmacies does little to nothing to lower drug prices.

The retail pharmacy giant expects to close a “significant portion” of its 8,600 U.S. locations over the next three years.

Walgreens will close a “significant portion” of its 8,600 U.S. locations over the next three years as it struggles to keep up with a rapidly evolving retail pharmacy industry, the company announced Thursday.

“We are at a point where the current pharmacy model is not sustainable and the challenges in our operating environment require we approach the market differently,” Walgreens chief executive Timothy Wentworth said Thursday during the company’s quarterly earnings call. “We do not expect an improvement in the U.S. retail environment.”

The Deerfield, Ill.- based pharmacy giant said 25 percent of its stores are underperforming and will be considered for closure. The majority of employees will be moved to other stores, Wentworth said.

While the company did not identify specific locations to close, the scope of the move could put more Americans at risk of living in pharmacy deserts.

Over the last two years, the nation’s largest pharmacy chains have been closing stores. Since February, Walgreens has closed 484 stores in the United States. Rite Aid, which filed for bankruptcy last year, has closed more than 500 stores. CVS has closed about 300 stores this year after announcing in 2021 that it would shutter 900 stores across three years.

Walgreens was kicked off the DOW in February, 2024 for poor performance https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/amazon-set-join-dow-jones-index-2024-02-20/

WBA stock dropped 25% today and hasn’t been this low since April, 1997

This could be interesting locally. We have one each of CVS, Walgreens and RiteAid. CVS probably dos the most business, it is open 24 hours including th pharmacy. The other two close at 8 PM and 10 PM respectively, and both close their pharmacies at 8. So I expect one of Walgreens or RiteAid to close, I guess it comes down to who blinks first.

My nearest Walgreens shares a parking lot with the biggest grocery store chain in the region. About the only thing that Walgreens offers that you can't find in the grocery store next to it is the photo printing.

Tons of recently vacated ones already in Downtown Chicago. I once heard that they were obligated to have a certain amount of location coverage due to accepting state funds for pharmaceutical reimbursement. Seems like that may have changed.

I live in a rurual area and Walgreens is the only close pharmacy....though Walmart has probably done them in. So it'll be 15 miles of driving each way if we need late night meds.

I use a pharmacy in the grocery store, which is convenient. Also get my vaccines there. With their club benefits prescriptions are cheaper than through my Blue Cross mail plan. Thought that was weird at first, but I can see how they'd save a lot not filing insurance on routine generic stuff.

I suggest you go to Revco, Eckerd or Big B instead.

We have 3 Walgreen's in town. Two are near 2 different Kroger's and the third is across the street from a CVS. The ones near the Kroger's rarely have cars in the parking lot. The one across teh street from the CVS seems busier. I wouldn't be surprised if both near Kroger's are shut down.
