Hate to be a wet blanket, but for the record…

”In May 2024, a rumor spread rapidly on social media, alleging that the price of McDonald's Big Mac changed from $0.50 to $8 between 1980 and 2024, while shrinking by 40% in size. One viral X post on the topic stated, ‘Big Mac went from $0.50 to $8 and lost 40% of its size from 1980-2024,’ concluding that ‘#Bitcoin fixes this.’”

“…in 1986, when The Economist's Big Mac Index was introduced, it cost $1.60. Statista, an online platform that specializes in data gathering, indicated that as of January 2024, Switzerland had the most expensive Big Macs in the world ($8.17). The average cost of a Big Mac in the U.S. was $5.69, while in the Eurozone it was $5.87.”

When the Big Mac came to CA in '68 or '69, it was over $1 but I don't remember how much.

The days of the 15¢ burger were long gone by the time Big Mac came to town.

Here in the most one of the most expensive states to live and eat in, CA, in one of the most expensive areas of CA, SF Bay Area, a Big Mac is ~$5.99, same as a dinky Filet-O-Fish.

But- It's Free Fries Friday, get a free Medium Fries with a $1 purchase.

Growing up in Florida in the early seventies, I could get a meal at McDonalds for $1 - a 50¢ Big Mac, small fries for 20¢ and a strawberry shake for 30¢. If mom was in a generous mood, I'd get another 25¢ for a FRIED Cherry Pie.

But then I remember 25¢ Apple Fritters or Bavarian Cremes at Mr. Donut, the Apple Dumpling at Wendy's, and Arby's Roast beef that had more meat than bun.

OK so the "Big Mac" was more affordable.

Did yo have internet? cell phones? did you have the advanced medical care we have now, these advanced drugs and gene therapy and all this stuff that makes most diseases manageable today? was the life expectancy the same or lower than it is now?

I would hit the McDonald’s on my lunch break during my evening shift at a research pilot plant in 1970. Two Big Macs for a buck, two large fries and a large Coke. The plant closed just short of a year. I gained one pound that year.
