Canada investigating Tesla for fraud
#1
Canadian officials are investigating an unusual spike in Tesla vehicle sales that coincided with the suspension of the federal EV rebate program in January. Over a three-day period, Tesla reported selling 8,600 vehicles at four locations across the country, resulting in $43 million in government rebates.

One Tesla location in Toronto reported more than 1,200 sales on January 11 alone, accounting for $4 million in rebates.

I only read the article (didn't watch the vid).

I assume that the rebates go to the vehicle purchaser?

So Tesla isn't getting the money.

I opted to make my Rivian deposit non-refundable before the bill was passed that put Rivians out of the range for the tax rebate. This allowed me to get the rebate even though I didn't take delivery until 2023.

Could be a similar thing happening here.

So Tesla isn't getting the money.

The seller is supposed to front the money to the purchaser at the time of purchase and before delivery, and then claims the rebate money from the government for themselves.

So, Tesla would get the money directly, assuming that the investigation finds no wrongdoing.

The question is, were the Tesla dealers negligent in making the requests for reimbursement so that these rebates represented legit purchases over the course of many months but filed just as the program was coming to its end, or did they file for rebates-reimbursements fraudulently.

By pushing through so many requests so rapidly, they shut down the rebate-site and kept others from filing for reimbursements.

So, Tesla looks scummy either way.

Sounds like something an Inspector General overseeing how the government doles out those rebates should investigate.

Oh, wait.
