I just got a new mac at work and the PC favored IT department is coming up soon to hook me up with an ethernet cable. Do I need to get any info from them so I can hook myself up to the network? Or does the mac find all the IP address, router, etc. all by itself?

It depends on how the network is set up.
If there is a DHCP server, and it is set up to do so, your computer will get an IP address and learn the IP addresses of the DNS server and default gateways automatically.
(in other words, probably)
