I don't have an external HD. (If I did, I would try Carbon Copy Cloner)
I put the ibook into Target Disk Mode and connected ti to my G4 Tower via Firewire.
I'm using Disk Utility on the G4 tower to make a disk image of the iBook's HD.
Will this do the trick? is it going to be an exact copy of what's on the HD?

I should clarify…
The video on the iBook is wonky, so I want to get it all off while I can see the screen to be used in my replacement iBook

The short answer is;
Yes... what you're doing (iBook in target disk mode, connected to G4, use Disk utility to make a disk image of the iBook HD) will work just fine.
I prefer using Carbon Copy Cloner....
You can set it to repair permissions before the clone also. (and yes, you could do the very same thing with Disk Utility).
Back in 10.2.x, I had some trouble getting clones I made with Disk Utility to be bootable once the image was cloned BACK to a machine.... so I switched to CCC and haven't looked back. I almost NEVER have trouble getting a CCC'ed image/drive to boot unless it was pretty well fubared to begin with.
Hope this helps!

I thought CCC couldn't be used in my case (to another machine) as opposed to an external HD.
I assume I would put CCC on the iBook? Hoping I can see it long enough to make it work, or does it work similar to Du in that I can put it on the tower and "suck the data off the iBook?

Why do you need CCC? Or any other SHAREWARE to do this?
The OS can do it. Disk Utility. Use it.

Super Duper will definitely do it. Been using that to image iBooks all week.

To clarify;
No... CCC does not have to be on the iBook.
As I understand it, you want to clone the iBook to a Disk Image on the G4?
If so, CCC is on the G4, the iBook in target disk mode. Clone away, using whatever tool suits you.
If, on the other hand, you want the G4 to recieve the clone as a bootable copy of the hard drive, and not presever anything on the G4 HD, THEN you would need to have your choice of cloning tool on the iBook and boot the G4 into Target Disk mode instead of the iBook.
Like I said; Disk Utility may well do the job perfectly... but my experience was poor with it under 10.2, so I switched to CCC. Disk Util might work perfectly under later 10.x.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, I have the .dmg from Disk Utility now on the tower. Only took a few (many!) hours
