Screwed up iBook HD install
#1
I was able to remove the speaker connector but when I was trying to remove the power switch connecter (blue/white wires), it broke off the board. I was trying to "pry" loose the connector but apparently I was on the socket part of it. So now what do I do?

Is it easily repairable (not by me but a Mac repair guy)? The connector must be soldered back onto the board by two tabs.

Should I go ahead and complete installing the new drive and put it back together up to connector part and have someone repair it?

This really is a bummer. Sad

How close are you to Woodstock, Illinois?

Not to blame, but were you using any sort of tutorial as you went?
I can't imagine attempting this without one.
The one I always use contains a very explicit warning:

I've used those, but after doing a few, I've modified my procedure to totally eliminate that specific problem. I don't disconnect the speaker or power connector from the logic board at all. I carefully lean the top case against the screen and then can wiggle the top shield out around the wires. Sometimes you need to undo some tape on the top case to get some more length out of the wires.

Yes, I was following the directions by ifixit. It did say the connector was tight but it's so damn small with so little place to see and move. I tried using tweezers to grab the connector but it kept slipping. I did not want to grab the wires and pull so I used a tiny flat screw driver to try to pop it out.

I'm in California but will be in Indianapolis, IN next week for 11 days. However, Woodstock, IL is still 250 miles away.

I was going to say I've got a new power switch for you until I read more closely and saw it was the connector off the board. Bad luck! If you need other bits, let me know and i'll try to help.

Yeah, Woodstock is close to 6 hours from Indie. Way not worth 12 hours of your time considering there's a chance it still can't be fixed;
Worth asking Jamie about, and maybe shipping. . . I think he's done it as a favor times past rather than an official OWC function (too much of a chance an even bigger mess can be made out of it).
Basically he just reflows the solder with a very fine soldering iron and a very steady hand.

No wonder someone posted a link, and asking me "if I knew what I would be doing, putting a new hd in my daughers ibook"

If I do it now, it will certainly be by reading this thread, and changing the how to's a little.

I am sure you will be successful in getting it fixed.. Although I can't see the solder area you need to fix, I was able to do some small solder repair work on another project (but not as expensive) and it worked.

Good luck,
