Me, Too! Complaint! New Nano Must Run on Tiger, WTF???
#1
Siblings and I went in on a new Nano for our mom for xmas. Went over there tonight to help her get it set up on her iMac G5 (10.3.9). Find out you must have friggin' TIGER to use the new Nano. Oh...unless you're on a flippin' WINBLOZE box. Then you're fine with whatever Winbloze bloatware you have, assuming it's made in the past five years or so which is what my sisters run on.

WTF, APPLE?!

My two sisters who are PeeCee people were astounded that Apple would do this to its users. I'm standing there in front of everyone looking like an idiot for being an Apple fan. So I guess a retail, run-on-any-Mac version of Tiger is ONLY $150 or so. So that 4g Nano is now $300. Man, I am embarrassed. So now I have to look at returning this Nano and getting her an iRiver or whatever the hell other mp3 player there is...that doesn't play all the music she's bought on iTMS already. F$%^k!

Feel free to PM me if anybody has a solution or an old Tiger they want to sell that will install on an iMac G5 (the first G5 model) 20".

Catch-22. Apple does not sell Tiger anymore.

Some are trying to price it like other discontinued Apple products. (iSight, Original Airport card) Here's a listing on Amazon at $239.

Leopard is cheaper.

That does suck. Apple has to drive OS and/or hardware purchases, I guess.

Would this white 1st gen do instead?

Are you sure you have to upgrade? Sometimes the products say one thing on the box but will still work under lesser circumstances.

I went through this very same situation with friends of ours that switched from a PC to Mac with the purchase of their Mac Mini 1.25 G4.

They love the Mini. Ever since the day they unboxed it.

They bought their son a new Nano and they came up against the same thing.

I had to install 10.4 on their Mini. I couldn't find any way around it and I tried.

People don't expect this kind of thing.

If the Nano runs on a PC with XP (released in 2000) then why the hell won't it run on 10.3.x?

Just isn't right.

Yep. Requires 10.4.8 or later.

Sorry.

There's always eBay for Tiger.

If it sucks, vote with your wallet-- return the Nano.

It's not Apple's fault that Windows is on a 7 year development cycle and Apple keeps the Mac OS around a 2 year cycle. Consider that they're really just supporting the current OS and maybe one older, in which case, 10.5 and 10.4 make sense. If they supported 7 years of the Mac OS, these iPods would still run in OS 9!

Thanks for the comments, all. Some sleuthing revealed that Leopard can be had for $99 but the whole thing still blows chunks. Haven't decided what I'm gonna do. I can see why it wouldn't work with 10.1 or Jag. But for this thing not to work with Panther which was still shipping a scant 3 years ago -- and the fact that it DOES work with a fossilized XP -- is nothing short of highway robbery. And I'm an Apple shareholder. I think I'll call them tomorrow just to bitch about it.

It does seem very odd considering that iTunes is supported on 10.3.9, makes one wonder what sort of unique support 10.4.8 adds that the Nano requires given that it's just a USB device.

Here are the requirements for iTunes.

Macintosh Requirements

* Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later or Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later required for iTunes
* Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later required for iPhone
* 500MHz G3 processor or better
* QuickTime 6.5.2 or later
* 256MB RAM
* Combo/SuperDrive to burn CDs
* Broadband Internet connection (DSL/Cable/LAN) for buying and streaming music
