Is there a legally unlocked iPhone in our future?

If Apple allowed ATT to unlock iPhones like they do their other phones I'm betting there would be a lot fewer "missing" iPhones in Apple's quarterly reports. I have no beef being tied to ATT, and honestly, an iPhone w/o visual voicemail wouldn't be as much fun. BUT I would like the option of putting in a pre-paid euro SIM when I'm overseas. Even better would be for ATT to work a deal out with the euro iPhone carriers for an affordable global roaming plan (w/ data) that you could switch into before you travel, and out of, when you return.

you can buy an officially unlocked one in france now - for a price.

you can make yourself a legally unlocked one now - you just void your warranty.

If unlocked iPhones were illegal, millions of iPhone users who are happily using unlocked iPhones worldwide would be very surprised. It's as legal as apple pie.
